La-33 Salsa concert from Columbia
Date: Saturday, June 07, 2014
Time: 8:00 PM
Venue: La Trade Fair Center - Round Pavilion
Address: Trade Fair, Accra
Organiser: Embassy of Colombia & Alliance Française Accra
Contact number: 050 12 87 814
With 60 thousand albums sold and nearly 2,000 different presentations in five continents over a decade, La-33 has become one of the most influential Colombian salsa orchestra on the international scene.
La-33 began in 2001 when brothers, Sergio and Santiago Mejia, assembled a group of musicians to form a salsa band. Interestingly, those who answered the call were not salsa performers, their inspiration was more of urban rhythms like rock, jazz and reggae.
The band is also inspired by the New York 70’s style, which combines the rough and dirty sounds of the city with Caribbean rhythms, thereby retaining a classically trained percussion, while introducing winds such as those of the orchestras from New York, as well as that dry sound of the saxophone. For more than a decade, the band has been experimenting and reinventing their music, and giving the public all their energy.
Listen to La-33 in concert in Spain.
This concert is sponsored by the Colombian Embassy in Ghana and will take place in a magical location, the Round Pavilion at the International Trade Fair Centre.

The Yale Club Of Ghana And The Association Of Yale Alumni present:
The National Symphony Orchestra Of Ghana, The Yale Concert Band and The Yale Percussion Ensemble in concert to benefit The Ghana-Yale Partnership For Global Health.
Join us in celebrating the groundbreaking and collaborative efforts of The Ghana-Yale Partnership for Global Health (GYPGH)! Inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s keynote address to the 2012 Summit on Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission (eMTCT) of HIV, the Ghana Health Service and Ghana-Yale Partnership for Global Health have launched an unprecedented public-private partnership aimed at making Ghana the first country in sub- Saharan Africa to eliminate Paediatric HIV.
The initial objective is to reduce the rate of mother to child transmission of HIV in Ghana from its current level of 15% to less than 5% by 2018, which would meet the World Health Organization's (WHO) criterion for elimination. With support from an expanded consortium of local, national, and global stakeholders, including the Government of Ghana (Office of the President; Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service; National AIDS Control Program), Christian Health Association of Ghana, Yale University (School of Medicine, Yale World Fellows Program, Association of Yale Alumni), IBM Foundation, ONE Campaign, University of Ghana, Ghana House of Chiefs, and Rotary Club of Ghana, the ultimate goal is a reduction in the rate of MTCT to less than 1% by 2020.
Building upon its mission of public service and education, the Yale Club of Ghana will host over 50 Yale students as they uplift this important initiative through music. As thought leaders in the future of Africa’s development, the Yale Club of Ghana is proud to be a sponsor of this inspired work and invites you to join them in celebration.
The concert will feature a world premier symphony by resident expat 2013 Yale grad and accraexpat.com member, Zoë Gorman! The piece, to be played by the National Symphony Orchestra, is composed of five movements inspired by different aspects of life in and around Accra. It melds traditional African rhythms, Azonto flair, Western classicism and something new and modern.
